REGION VII EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Volunteers Wanted for Statewide Emergency Response System New PSA Targets Health Care Professionals and General Public January 13, 2012—The Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council (MCHC), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) today released a new public service announcement to raise awareness about Illinois Helps, a statewide database that registers volunteers to respond to major disasters or public health emergencies in the state. MCHC, IDPH and CDPH are encouraging both medical and non-medical volunteers to register with Illinois Helps. More than 3,700 Illinoisans are already registered with the system and may be called upon to respond to any number of emergency situations including blizzards, disease outbreaks like H1N1 and bioterrorism attacks. Illinois Helps also allows hospitals to verify the licenses and credentials of professional health care volunteers who come to their facilities to care for the influx of patients experienced during emergencies. Today, the FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau launched a new web page: Broadband and Public Safety and Homeland Security to better ensure that the public safety community, the general public, government agencies and communications providers have access to the latest news and information on the FCC's efforts to implement the National Broadband Plan for public safety. The implementation of the plan will include initiatives to bring interoperable communications to America's first responders through the creation of a nationwide wireless broadband network and new cyber security reporting and monitoring programs; as well as Next Generation 9-1-1 services; emergency alerts and warnings through a variety of outlets (including via television and radio broadcasts (Emergency Alert System), wireless hand-held devices, such as cell phones and the Internet) and much more. The web page includes access to the latest press releases, public notices, field hearings, and presentations. We encourage you to visit these pages for updates and background information to assist with your coverage of the National Broadband Plan and its impact on public safety across America. To access these pages, please visit: http://www.fcc.gov/pshs/broadband.html
The CDC is pleased to announce the public launch of "SNAPS: Snap Shots of State Population Data." SNAPS is a free service to the public that provides local-level community profile information nationwide. It can be browsed by county and state and searched by zip code. SNAPS serves as a valuable tool when responding to public health emergency events at the state, Tribal, and local levels. It provides a "snap shot" of key variables for consideration in guiding and tailoring health education and communication efforts to ensure diverse audiences receive critical public health messages that are accessible, understandable, and timely.
